Local Ocean, Newport’s destination restaurant and seafood market, will bring some of its signature dishes to Portland this weekend.
Chef Enrique Sanchez-Rodriguez, who has cooked at the bayfront restaurant since it opened in 2005, will take over Flying Fish’s Chef Shack cart from 1 to 8 p.m. April 2 and 3. There, he will whip up Local Ocean favorites such as smoked black cod deviled eggs, teriyaki tuna kebabs and moqueca de peixe, a creamy Brazilian seafood stew.
Local Ocean, which buys its seafood directly from area fishermen, was already well known beyond Newport but made further inroads into Portland during the pandemic. In 2020, owner Laura Anderson launched DockBox, a meal kit program featuring fresh seafood and Local Ocean recipes with a weekly pickup option in Southeast Portland.
Flying Fish, a restaurant and market that we compared to Local Ocean in our guide to Portland’s best new restaurants last year, launched its Chef Shack in the restaurant’s parking lot in January, hoping to highlight a different chef each month or so. Upcoming Chef Shack appearances include Eli Marroquin of Portland Pupusas y Taqueria on April 9; Mike Aldridge of Mid-City Smash Burger on April 16 and Don Salamone of Burger Stevens on May 14.
Details: Catch Local Ocean chef Enrique Sanchez-Rodriguez cooking up some of the Newport restaurant’s signature dishes at Flying Fish’s Chef Shack, 3004 E. Burnside St., from 1 to 8 p.m., April 2-3.
