Mahi Mahi Tacos Ingredients
- Mahi Mahi Fish
- Olive Oil
- Mahi Mahi Seasoning : salt, pepper, chili powder, oregano, garlic powder, and cumin.
How to Make Mahi Mahi Tacos
First of all, you’ll be seasoning the Mahi Mahi fish with the spice blend. Make sure to coat the fish on both sides evenly and feel free to press down the spice until you feel it has stuck well on to the fish.
Use quality olive oil in a skillet ( I always use Mina olive oil which you can read about in this fabulous Tuna Salad Recipe with Olive Oil Dressing ). Place the fish in to the skillet once the oil is hot.
You can also cook the mahi-mahi on a grill pan if you want to add charred grill lines to it.
Once the fish is golden, flip it and continue cooking on the other side until it’s cooked through. This will take about 10-15 minutes in total depending on the size of your fillets.
This is what cooked mahi mahi fish looks like. Firm white fillets, that hold on to the spice blend so well and can be baked, pan seared or grilled beautifully.
Fish Taco Sauce
Make the Poblano sauce for fish tacos while the fish is cooking. Ingredients for the sauce:
- Sour cream
- Jalapeños
- Cilantro
- Lime Juice
- Salt and Pepper
- Olive oil
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth.
Assemble Mahi Mahi Tacos
To assemble the Fish Tacos you’ll need:
- Cooked Mahi Mahi
- Poblano Sauce
- Fish Taco Slaw
- Tortilla (charred optionally)
- Jalapeños
- Sliced Avocados
- Cilantro
- Lime wedges
Take a corn or flour tortilla wrap and heat it over a gas stove for 1 minute on each side till it’s charred around the edges.This is optional to add a charred flavor. You can alternatively do this over the grill. Add a piece of Mahi Mahi fish over the tortilla.
Pile in some fish taco slaw and toppings. I used cilantro, avocado slices, sliced jalapenos, and poblano sauce; however, you can use other toppings of your choice too like chipotle mayo, sriracha, hot sauce, or salsa.
And with that your tacos are ready!!
Serve Mahi Mahi Tacos
The best part about this recipe is serving it. There are many ways to serve the mahi-mahi tacos.
Poblano Sauce: I served it with poblano sauce, which adds a sweet, tangy, and spicy flavor to the tacos. It’s pretty easy to make. Simply, take some poblano peppers and char them slightly. You can substitute jalapenos for poblano. Next, put the charred peppers, cilantro, lime juice, avocado, salt, olive oil, honey, and sour cream/yogurt in a food processor till you get that thick saucy consistency. Drizzle the sauce over the tacos once they are fully assembled.
Fish Taco Slaw: For the slaw, I made this scrumptious fish taco slaw using shredded cabbage, carrots, thinly sliced apples or peaches, cilantro, onions, sour cream, lime juice, salt, pepper, and sugar. Mix all these ingredients in a bowl and your flavourful fish taco slaw is ready to be enjoyed. You can use mayonnaise or Greek yogurt in the slaw too in place of sour cream. The point is to make it creamy.
Taco Bar: If you have guests over, who are eating healthy, or on keto, you can make a taco bar. Just place all the ingredients separately in bowls next to the tortilla wraps, so that the guests can make their own customized tacos.
Mahi Mahi Tacos Recipe Tips
- Mahi Mahi is the best fish for tacos because of how firm the texture is, and how neutral the taste of it is.
- The fillet usually has the perfect shape for tacos, so season right away and then slice once cooked.
- You can grill the mahi mahi for tacos in an outdoor grill. See below.
- The jalapeno poblano sauce is optional but so good! It can be made days in advance.
- Charring the tortillas for tacos adds so much flavor, but you can skip.
- The recipe can be doubled or tripled and even made in large quantities for a large crowd.
- Make the Fish Taco Slaw ahead of time as it keeps well in the fridge.
- Add the toppings of your choice.
Grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos
For delicious grilled tacos, you’ll season the fish as above in the recipe and add in the olive oil. Make sure the fish is well coated in spice and oil.
Preheat the grill to medium high and oil your crates or use a perforated grill pan. Grill the mahi mahi fish for 5-7 minutes per side until cooked through. Remove and proceed with assembling the tacos.
What kind of fish is best for fish tacos?
For delicious fish tacos, you can use any white fish fillet. You can use salmon, cod, or tilapia; however, I used mahi-mahi because it does not have that fishy taste, and it turns out really firm and juicy.
How do you bake mahi-mahi tacos?
If you do not want to cook the mahi-mahi fish in a skillet, you have the option of baking it as well.
Season the mahi-mahi fish with seasoning and oil, then place it on a baking sheet and pop it in a 400 degrees oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can broil it. You want to cook it till the fish reaches 140 degrees F. You might need a meat thermometer for this. When it reads 140 degrees, it means the fish is ready to be served.
What goes well with fish tacos?
Fish tacos are quite versatile, so they go well with tons of stuff. For instance, I used the poblano sauce and fish taco slaw in this recipe, but you can use any sauce or topping of your preference. If you want your tacos to be crunchy, you can top them with lettuce, cabbage, diced onions, and coleslaw.
However, if you’re looking for something creamy, you can use sour cream, guacamole, or some other creamy dressing. For added flavor, you can top your tacos with mango salsa and pineapple salsa or strawberry corn salsa.

Instructions

Start by seasoning the mahi mahi fish fillets on both sides. Make sure you coat the fish well and press it down to stick.

In a large skillet (or indoor grill), add in the oil over medium high heat and then add in the fish. Sear for 7-8 minutes until ready to flip.

Flip and cook on the other side for about 7 minutes until the mahi mahi has cooked through.

Remove the fish onto a cutting boar and slice into strips. You can drizzle some lime juice and cilantro.

In the meantime, make the sauce by combining all ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Assemble the tacos: Take a charred tortilla, add the fish, the slaw, avocados, jalapeños and a final drizzle of sauce.
